Helmet Fact Sheet
It is a Fact That
* Wearing a bicycle helmet reduces the risk of head injury by 85%
* Even "minor" head injury has shown to produce long term problems with memory and learning.
*Head injury is the primary contributing cause in 70-80% of all bicycling fatalities.
*Most bicycling crashes involving children do not involve automobiles. Most children are injured when they fall from their bicycles, collide with fixed objects or lose control due to mechanical problems or road conditions.
*Nationally, approximately 600 children die each year from bicycle related injuries, with 80% of the victims suffering head trauma.
*The lifetime costs for one severely head injured bicyclist average about $4.5 million.
*The overall yearly economic costs of bicycle injuries in children nationally are in excess of $1 Billion.
*Wearing helmets has decreased head injuries in other recreational sports including football, baseball, and hockey.
*Currently, in most communities, less than 3-5% of children wear bicycle helmets.
*It is estimated that if all bicyclists in the U.S. wore helmets, one bicycle related death would be prevented each day and one head injury would be prevented every 4 minutes.
